Protecting a Vital Industry

Oysters are economic, culinary, ecological and cultural mainstays in Louisiana and throughout the Gulf Coast. Environmental changes to oyster habitats have affected salinity levels critical to their growth and survival. As a result, production and overall health of the natural populations have declined. The LO-SPAT project aims to understand and develop oyster populations that are able to survive in challenging environments. The applied research initiative will address the pressing need to sustain oyster populations and support the region’s vital seafood industry.
